Hasinger accepts Patriot Award

On December 15, IfA Director G√ľnther Hasinger accepted the Patriot Award on behalf of IfA for supporting programs that employ National Guard reservists, such as IfA employee Chris Kaukali, who was on active duty for four and a half years. From left to right, Command Sergeant Major Raymond Irie, Kaukali, Hasinger, US Army Reserve Ambassador P. Pasha Baker, and Lieutenant Colonel Carl Cruz. Irie and Cruz are from the 3303d Mobilization Support Battalion.


Henry receives research award

UH President M.R.C. Greenwood, Board of Regents Chair Eric Martinson, Lt. Governor Brian Schatz, and Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa congratulate Regents' Medal for Excellence in Research awardee IfA astronomer J. Patrick Henry. IfA astronomer Lisa Kewley also received a Regents' Medal for Excellence in Research at the convocation ceremony in September.


Maui Workshop

The Maui Student/Teacher Heliophysics Workshop put on by IfA's Center for Computational Heliophysics in Hawaii (C2H2) took place on November 25-26 at Baldwin High School. Intermediate and high school science teachers and students participated in hands-on activities in related to electromagnetism, atom/ion formation, and the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) satellite simulation. Here participants lock arms to form rigid bonds to simulate the atoms in a solid.
