The annual AstroDay Festival in Hilo took place on May 2. It mixed cultural performances with science and technology education, especially astronomy. Attendees had the chance to obtain Mauna Kea Brand Trading Cards by visiting the various booths. The 2009 Big Island Toyota Excellence in Teaching award went to Alicia Hui of Haili Christian School. She received a floral bouquet from Kui & I florists, a gift basket from Hawaii Island Gourmet Products, gift certificate from KTA Super Stores, a check for $250 from Big Island Toyota, and a computerized NexStar 4SE telescope from Celestron Telescope. Kathy Sewake, a teacher at E. B. DeSilva Elementary School, hosted a Lego robotics discovery zone, where visiting youngsters could build and operate mini-sumo robots that fought in a small ring.
