A record 15,000 visitors attended the sixth annual AstroDay Festival at the Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo on April 21. Over 45 exhibitors, including the IfA and other observatories on Mauna Kea, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Las Cumbres Observatory (operator of the Faulkes Telescope on Maui), Arizona State University Mars Education Program, and UC Berkeley's Sun–Earth Connection, filled the mall with hands-on activities and games.

Cindy Fong of Hilo Intermediate School received this year's AstroDay Excellence in Teaching award, which recognizes Hawaii Island K-12 teachers and university professors whose creativity and enthusiasm engage students in science curricula in exciting and meaningful ways. The Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce (HICC), the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawaii (JCCIH), and Representative Clift Tsuji support this award.
