ARCS Scholarships

The Honolulu chapter of Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) has been generously offering scholarships to astronomy graduate students (among other disciplines) since 1982.

In recent years ARCS support has taken the form of the Helen Jones Farrar ARCS Scholarship of $5000, which is awarded annually in April-May to be used the following academic year.

Selection Criteria

The following are ARCS guidelines for selecting recipients:

  • Recipients must be United States citizens
  • Recipients must be selected without regard to sex, race or religion
  • Recipients must be full-time students who are likely to continue their studies in the same field during the following academic year
  • Recipients must be exceptional students at the PhD level, as manifested by a grade point average of 3.5, by previous records of accomplishment, and by aptitude in their chosen field.

Procedures

The ARCS scholarships are administered by the University of Hawaii Foundation. The graduate chair is notified each February of the availability of ARCS scholarships and invites applications from eligible astronomy students. These applications are screened by the Awards Committee who nominate the scholar and submit the name to the foundation.
