The Friends of the Institute for Astronomy (FIfA) foster community involvement and develop private funding resources in order to support the people, advance the research, promote astronomy education and public outreach, and enhance the activities of the Institute.
Join the Friends of the Institute for Astronomy and explore our exciting Universe. We invite you to join, wherever you live, to support research and education of interest and benefit to everyone.
To join, please decide on your participation level, as listed below, and fill out a membership application. You can also join online via the University of Hawaii Foundation secure Web site. UHF processes all donations to the Friends.

Individual $50
Senior/Student* $25
*A senior is 65 or older. A student has a current student ID card and carries more than a 50% course load.
Membership includes:
- E-mail and printed invitations to public events, including the quarterly Frontiers of Astronomy lectures, the annual IfA Open House, star parties, astronomy workshops, and more
- Invitations to special Friends-only events, such as pre-lecture receptions, laboratory tours, and private lectures
- Monthly star charts for Hawaii
- Subscription to the IfA quarterly newsletter, Na Kilo Hoku
- Option to be on the e-mail list for IfA colloquia
Family $100
Membership includes all the Individual benefits for the entire family to enjoy.
Contributor $250
Membership includes all family benefits, plus:
- IfA library privileges
- Astronomer-guided tours of IfA facilities on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. (Travel expenses are the responsibility of the members.)
Associate $500
Membership includes all above benefits, plus:
- A copy of the DVD, What's Up in the Universe
- Invitations for two to special events (annual Christmas party, graduate student recruitment events, and other social events)
- One Individual membership to give as a gift
Sponsor $1,000
Membership includes all above benefits, plus:
- Invitation to lunch for one person with the IfA director
- Astronomer-guided tour of observatories on Mauna Kea or Haleakala, followed by an evening observing session for one person. (Travel expenses are the responsibility of the member.)
Patron $1,500 or more
Membership includes all above benefits, plus:
- Permanent recognition of your gift on a plaque at the IfA
- UH Foundation President's Club membership

More Information About Giving
The Friends are grateful for any amount you want to donate, either in addition to your membership or as a one-time gift. You can make online donations to the Friends via the UHF secure Web site. For more information about giving to the Friends, please contact the University of Hawaii Foundation.
Large Donations
Gifts and bequests to benefit the Institute for Astronomy are an important means of enhancing educational and research programs. They are tax deductible and may be made in the form of securities or through estate gifts. Opportunities to support the IfA's education, research, and outreach goals include the following:
- Sponsoring student or post-doctoral fellows
- Providing gifts of laboratory or computer equipment
- Endowing a named faculty position or research group within the IfA

The Fine Print
Your gift, less the value of taxable membership benefits, is deductible to the extent provided by law. You may become a member and choose to forego the taxable benefits to retain the full tax deduction of your donation. If you want to do this, please fill out the membership application and check "If you would like to forego taxable membership benefits but still enjoy all other benefits, please check here" under the participation level list on the application.
- The full amount of membership at the Individual, Family, and Contributor levels is tax deductible.
- $480 is deductible for an Associate membership. The taxable benefit is $20 for the DVD.
- $962 is deductible for a Sponsor and $1,462 for a Patron. Taxable benefits include the DVD listed above for an Associate membership, plus $18 for lunch with the IfA director.
Please note that the membership benefits listed above are subject to change without notice due to circumstances beyond our control. Also please note that you may be unable to take advantage of some benefits, such as attending receptions and lectures, if you do not live on Oahu.
