IRTF: Past, Present and Future
John Rayner

The NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) is a 3-m infrared telescope located on the summit of Maunakea. IRTF is run by UH under contract to NASA. It was established in 1979 primarily to provide infrared observations in support of NASA's planetary programs but with fifty percent of observing time also made available for non-planetary astronomy. I will review the origin and history of IRTF and then discuss its current operation, technical capabilities and science. I will end the talk with a discussion of future planning and prospects.
